The Rice Research Institute is mainly engaged in the research on rice germplasm resources, variety breeding, biotechnology, tillage & cultivation, physiology and ecology. At present, the Institute has established the National Germplasm Guangzhou Wild Rice Nursery and Guangdong Rice Germplasm Resources Bank, which preserve nearly 19,000 cultivated varieties and more than 5,000 accessions of wild rice germplasm. Therefore, the Institute is one of the units preserving the most rice germplasm resources in China. The annual coverage rate of the varieties developed by the Institute occupies about 50% of the total rice planting area in Guangdong Province, and the transfer ratio of research achievements of the Institute is up to 90%.
